Moscovium

Moscovium is a synthetic chemical element; it has symbol Mc and atomic number 115. It is named after Moscow, Russia, where the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) is located. It was first synthesized in 2003 by a joint team of Russian and American scientists at JINR, and recognized as a new element in 2016. Moscovium is extremely radioactive and has no known practical applications outside of scientific research.

Why This Element

Moscovium is the first group 15 element beyond bismuth. No stable isotopes exist. Relativistic effects predicted to compress Mc's 7p orbital, making it prefer +1 oxidation state rather than +3/+5 like lighter group 15 metals.

Moscovium is the 115th superheavy element, first synthesized in 2003 by the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) team in Dubna, Russia, and named after Moscow. Its isotopes have extremely short half-lives, it does not occur in nature, and only a few atoms are produced per synthesis. It has no industrial uses and is studied only for nuclear physics and superheavy-element research.
